5Highly recommended!  Jul 19, 2007 By A Customer
My two-year old loves this toy! I mix up all the pieces and put them on the wrong posts and she takes great delight in putting them all back where they're supposed to go. This set is great for teaching/reinforcing colors, shapes and numbers. It's made out of sturdy wood like all the Melissa and Doug products and the pieces are easy for little hands to take off and put on.

I had reservations about ordering this because another reviewer had mentioned that the pentagons were tagged with the number 4 and the squares were tagged with the number 5. However, I ordered it anyway and was pleasantly surprised to find that they have apparently rearranged the shapes to fix this problem. On the set I received there is one circle for #1, two rectangles for #2, three triangles for #3, four squares for #4, and five pentagons for #5.

My only regret is that I didn't get this sooner. It's recommended for 2 years and up but I think with supervision it could be introduced from 12-15 months on. By the way, I ordered this with the Melissa and Doug Beginner Pattern Blocks, the Melissa and Doug Geometric Stacker, and the Lauri Pegboard. This stack and sort board and the beginner pattern blocks are definitely my daughter's overall favorites so far.

5More than one dimensional  Apr 10, 2011 By connorb
I love this toy!

We bought this for our first son about two years ago when he was around 16 months. It is still out regularly as we have a second son that is about 18 months. We have not had any issues with durability despite heavy use from two boys on hardwood floors - it's not perfect but we haven't had any colour come off on our floor and the few chips appear to be from being thrown, dropped, smashed (as many boys will do) rather than from gnawing.

I scanned through the feedback and decided to take the time to contribute this review because I did not see anyone point out the geometrical attribute that corresponds to the number of pieces. This adds another dimension that is still of educational value to our preschooler. I think that this is pretty cool:
- 5 pieces=pentagon;
- 4 pieces=square;
- 3 pieces=triangle;
- 2 pieces=rectangle (yes it has four sides but of two different lengths); and,
- 1 piece=circle (one continuous side).

I would have no reservations about strongly recommending this toy.

5Great Toy!  Mar 15, 2007 By D. Gelke
My daughter is two and she loves it! We use it to match colors right now, but it will be helpful for counting, too. Very durable. One of those simple but brilliant toys.

2Paint comes off way too easily  Feb 08, 2010 By S. Kellner
My son got this for Christmas when he was 10 months old and we found out very quickly that the paint comes off soooo easily! He only has 2 teeth but still obviously puts everything in his mouth - well, those 2 little teeth got a significant amount of paint off whereas his other colored wooden toys have a much more durable paint that does not come off even after minutes of gnawing. Also, we have hardwood floors and when he crawls around when a piece in his hand, the paint inevitably comes off and gets rubbed on the floor, staining it with a streak. There are plenty of other similar toys on the market with more durable paint, i.e. the KID-O brand.

5Great educational toy!  Oct 19, 2006 By A. Briney
Great toy for 12 - 24 month range. My daughter (17 months) loves taking them off and replacing them.
